Hardship trail Heartship Trail.... Kinda harkens back to 60's folk music. I liked the slide guitar. The production seemed a little mechanical. I liked the thick harmonies. I did like the guitar picking though. Odd thought I had it almost sounded like an Irish folk song (with different instrumentation). I can see the lyrics trying to paint word pictures...but I'm not sure I got it. Nice Melody! - SteveTraycee from Aurora, Colorado on 15Dec2008 A song retold This reminds me strongly of Gordon Lightfoot. The song grew on me but still it feels a little jaded. The harmonies are really good and the mix including the guitasr and vocal balance is great. - laurencegien from Augsburg, Germany on 14Dec2008 As plain as a diamond This is just so in every respect. A great tune and lyric which carry that classic feel which is both comfortingly familiar and thrillingly fresh. Everything is cleanly done but not clinical - there's a real warmth in the vocals - both lead and backing, lovely sweet harmonies and all the instrumentation is warm and rewarding to the ear. Not having many reference points to this style of music I would say the warmth of James Taylor, the fresh classicism of Kate and Anna McGarrigle and the ear for a good tune of Michelle Shocked. A gem. - anthonyrose from Bournemouth, United Kingdom on 10Dec2008 Fine Middle Song for a Late Night Set Well produced: good balance among the instruments and vocals, and excellent placement of each in the stereo field. The harmony vocals add beautiful texture to the song. To me, this is a good middle song to a set that would include some of your very uptempo numbers, and other ballads like this one. Not an incredible tune, but one that sits nicely among others for an excellent night of your folk music. - ojo from Ajax, Ontario, Canada on 6Dec2008 Good harmony Kind of reminds me of Jimmy Buffett at first, but the dobro pulls it out of that. Nice harmony vocals, and overall a good recording. - ragbass from Lynchburg, Virginia on 3Dec2008 Good Tune for the Car, but Punch Up the Lyric.. This is a fun little tune that I'd enjoy listening to in the car. The syle is accessible and easy to pick up, but the tune was solid enough to be worth repeating. The lyrics are nice, but none of them really pop out with imagery that is new or engaging. If you went through and cut out all of the cliches, or images that weren't doing much work, and added some imagery that grabbed us, you'd have a much stronger piece. "Going out and going down," etc. I enjoyed the harmony, but wanted it to go somewhere, to build as the song progressed (not much, just a little). Maybe start smaller? Make sure the instruments are in sync during the breaks. Thanks for an enjoyable two-and-a-half minutes! - Christopher_Grundy from Unspecified on 14Nov2008 strong voice you have a nice voice.the song was too predictable for me.what saved it was the guitar solo and the length of the song , short and sweet. - watubi from Danielson, Connecticut on 8Nov2008 Nice Dobro Excellent dobro. Well mixed, nice bass, and the drums come in well. The vocals and backups are really pretty but feel a bit clean. I kind of want to hear a Guy Clark rasp, but beautiful none the less. - bigsurmusic from Seattle, Washington on 29Oct2008 good song sound production is great i like the playing to. sounds like a properly produced record. i like some of the lyrics too. overall a good song - lewie from United Kingdom on 28Oct2008 Basement Japes Lovely guitar sound and playing. The voice is smooth. Slide playing adds interest and the track builds nicely with bass, drums and vox. Problem is song sounds exactly like Dylans "Million dollar Bash" off the Basement Tapes (slowed down a bit). - Alex_J31 from London (Sw), United Kingdom on 26Oct2008 electric folkiness some story telling lyrics, gentle guitar playing, a slide solo, some sweet layered harmonies and tambourine - you've got a folk hit! - ChristaCouture from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on 25Oct2008 Something different Original and nicely understated, well played and easy on the ear. The vocals and harmonies are good. All in all, very good. - daviebennett from Glasgow, United Kingdom on 23Oct2008 THIS is FOLK!! Folks..let me be (not) the first to tell you this is beautiful Folk music. Gads..where do I begin. *Great hook.."Hardship Trail" is a sweet turn of phrase and you sell it like a pro! *Great singer..reminds me of Arlo Guthrie or Gordon Lightfoot. *Cool harmonies..got that coffehouse group-that-hit-the big time sound. *GREAT song!!!! Suave and easy like Jimmy Buffet but with an edge like Woody Guthrie. *Great pickin'...clean and well articulated parts perfectly blended. *Awesome production..a "live" feel without the unfiltered impurities. It is high grade production quality without sounding produced. I love it! - daveyngr from Pine Grove, California on 22Oct2008 decent tune The arrangement makes this song interesting even if the music itself is material ever folk music fan has heard before. You guys are obviously pros! - andyflattery from Denver, Colorado on 20Oct2008 Sing-Along! Good production. The mood is fine and the scene is set by the lyrics. It gets catchier as it goes and that is a good thing. Very good song. The melody is a bit familiar, which makes the song more memorable, but the lyrics are unique. - alexisthompson from Bell Buckle, Tennessee on 18Oct2008 Travelling Song I like a good travelling song, and this one is no hardship to listen to. The instrumentation is good, well-played, with a good mix of instruments. My only complaint is that there is a boomy sound, either from the bass or from a bodhran, that detracts from the otherwise fine arrangement; this can be remedied by a simple remix. The lyrics are well-written, and sung with feeling; the backup vocals work well with the lead voice. I would recommend inserting a bridge (a verse sung over a different chord pattern) before the instrumental break. This would add some variety to the song structure, which is now the traditional verse/chorus structure. Good work overall! - rdm321 from Canada on 17Oct2008 Clarity Please So is this chap climbing into a yacht on the back of a trailer to head down the highway or what? The vocals are a little indistinct "The harpshit trail"? Nice slide guitar licks though. - ibrowze from Penzance, Cornwall, United Kingdom on 16Oct2008 great song love the guitars. love the vocals. they bring something very deep. depth is what make this tune very listenable. thank you - life4live from Pensacola, Florida on 8Oct2008 storms will abate I might have reviewed you before, and said you sound like James Taylor. That stands here as well. That's a good thing, what a smooth voice. Your song structure and melody are classic. It sounds new, yet immediately familiar. The playing here is good. This is a singer's song, there's no need to overdo it, and you guys don't. What else can I say here? This was nice to listen to! - jluecke from Jefferson City, Missouri on 8Oct2008 Tradesmanlike presentation Well executed with fairly standard placement of voices and instrumentation. Lead singer does a competent trademanlike job, but the overall performance does not engender sympathy for the singer's plight. The lyrics are well matched with the melody, but the maritime imagery ("sailor" and "wind in sails" is confused with that of the old west ("hardship trail") I found disconcering. - WingedAngel from Cambridge, Massachusetts on 30Sep2008 I'm very impressed Production is great. This song has a really good feel. The vocals sound very good. I especially like the overlapped vocals with harmonization. A suggestion I have would be to cut back the lead guitar a bit. Especially with the vocals. The guitar is a distraction from the vocals at parts. Tell your slide guitarist to swallow his ego. Great song. - mallrats69420 from Bettendorf, Iowa on 29Sep2008 |
