Praise the Lord Festival Music This really reminded me of a song being played at a festival like in the movies A River Runs Through It and O Brother Where Art Thou? I chalk that up to the instrumentation which is key here. Great fiddle and banjo, superb really. The lyrics, which usually makes or breaks the song for me, are great. Light hearted, comical. I was hearing "Praise the Lord" the first time and thought, oh it's religous music and thought it was kind of strange after the line about Whiskey. Of course your thanking him for pretty girls and then I cracked up and thought, awsome. It's done well but not overdone and with lyrics like that, it could easy go bad, but it doesnt. To sum up, great song. Really, I loved it. - brianboomer from Coalinga, California on 23Apr2009 appalachian yeeha a tight combo of drums, fiddle, banjo (and geetar?)provide a solidity to a song that certainly lifts in the chorus but is otherwise average. The 'praise the lord' chorus (praise to booze and floozys in this instance) gives the song its much needed peaks and the shouting male voices add some nice volume to a lead vocal that has potential but in this outing feels constricted. An uplifting spirit of no regrets and wine, women and song permeates the piece but falls short of real deal bluegrass booze blues. - McGinley from Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom on 23Apr2009 bluegrass for the lord Fun sound. Good lead vocals. Instruments are fine, not moving. The background vocals must be quite a crowd, and it over powers a little. The lyrics are not really my taste, but fit the singer;s voice. Recording has a live sound, which matches the energy of the vocalist. The hook line repeats too much. - soundsfx from Grand Ledge, Michigan on 20Apr2009 Tavern Foottapper I couldnt make out the lyric in the hook. Giving me WHAT?thirst? and pretty girls. The song has a great tempo tho and it creates a mood and a sense of an old tavern troupe. - johnmiles from Boone, North Carolina on 20Apr2009 Praise the lord indeed The musicianship throughout this song is very high from the drumming roll at the start to the banjo picking and fiddle playing. It is very much in a country and western style and the lyrics can not fail to make you smile ("Praise the lord, for giving me thirst and pretty girls") At 3.25 it is the perfect length, it does not overstay its welcome. The mix is good and band sound very tight. The singer has a fantastic gravelly quality to his voice which sounds as if he has been gargling with whiskey. A very enjoyable tune! - RichyExe from United Kingdom on 19Apr2009 Country Up beat cool song with nice chord changes. reminds me of Smoky and the bandit. vocalist has a nice tone. - RichyRox from Staten Island, New York on 16Apr2009 praise the lord! Fun folk tune!! good intro... the drums were a nice way to start it, with the roles. what a fun song once it got into the meat of the song I really liked it. The only thing at all that I can point out at all is I'm still not sure what you said though "for "giving me______and pretty girls" sounds like you say pearls but I'm not sure. I loved the song regardless. The vocal has an great natural vibrato, interesting voice I liked it a lot. Good band too, the song built nicely. great fun! - TerryLynn from Fort Myers, Florida on 3Apr2009 banjo/voice juxtaposition like the banjo/voice juxtaposition. a real rough-edge with the old-timey banjo/fiddle sound. lots of energy in this song. can't quite make out the lyric on the first "giving me ..." will try to catch it next go 'round. cool song! - ananas from Unspecified on 31Mar2009 More grit, good sentiment That "praise the lord" might be a little too abrasive, even for a drinking song. I like the sentiment, though. The violin's nice, but I think this whole thing could be looser, for the sake of not having, you know, a really cleanly recorded drinking song. - calebhutton from Bellingham, Washington on 17Mar2009 Fingerpicking good Good energy and musicianship in this piece. It made me want to move. Your hook made me want to hear the rest of the story. LIke the fiddle solo at about 1:59. Keeps the listener interested. I also liked how you back everything off at about 2:20 and then bring them all back in again. I always like that when it's done well, as it builds a kind of climax into the music. Your vocals and harmonies are good but come off sounding a bit harsh at times, which might actually be what you are aiming for and if so, good job. Nice work - perocon from Vassalboro, Maine on 14Mar2009 Country Flavour I really like the countrified instrumentation - who can dislike a song that uses banjo & fiddle so effectively. The song structure is good; the verse and chorus complement each other nicely. The drums-only break makes up for the lack of a bridge. My only recommendation is that the vocals should be brought up in the mix somewhat. The instruments, especially banjo & drums, sometimes overpower the singer. - rdm321 from Canada on 2Mar2009 Where's Animal? I like fiddles. I like banjos. I like harmony. I don't like songs about debauchery. I also wonder if this is anything close to your speaking voice because you sound like a the bandleader from the Muppet Show. I like the percussion, with the drum roll thing. That's creative. - trung from Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada on 24Feb2009 Rollicking folk song This song hits the spot in terms of genre. The writing of the song makes a great fist of using all the stylistic cues, both melodically and lyrically, to evoke the great rollicking 'rascal' folk songs. The instrumentation is exactly what you'd expect. The back up harmonies are strong and masculine. The only thing I'm not sure about (and it's a matter of taste only) is the lead vocal. I find it a little unconvincing and not as strong as the song requires. Good Stuff, though! - jeffburton from Byron Bay, Nsw, Australia on 29Jan2009 Put a kick in your step This track is great. A drum intro gets you right into the verses and very quickly into the chorus which features harmonies and some quality yelling. The fiddle deserves a mention as does the banjo which add so much to the feeling. The song never lingers too long on any part and keeps your attention and a swing in your step. - Jehan21 from Australia on 24Jan2009 Irish country What can I say. The couplets are good. The instruments are played very good. The vocals are great. Profesional production But the refrein sounds over the top and not needed. Ruins the casual vibe of the song. - LeftLuggage from Amersfoort, Netherlands on 21Jan2009 fascinating I like the quirkiness of this song. I wonder if the vocalist is Scottish or Irish, I hear a little accent in there. I think this song would most be appreciated be performed live. Definitely a pub favorite. The percussion intro caught my attention and I like that, again kudos for quirkiness. - jenbluhm from Minneapolis, Minnesota on 14Jan2009 i like it banjo adds some drive in the song. the fiddle is pretty great - the backing vocals in the chorus are working well. the lyrics are well written, though simple. i really like the cymbals in the chorus too. adds to the beat. good song - ringofwillis from Sarnia, Ontario, Canada on 2Jan2009 Nice sound Marching band drum intro - which is okay, but I would stay away from it as a rule of thumb. And then the band comes in: fiddle, bass, etc. and it sounds great. Vocals nice and gritty - a little too staccato and punctuated, but good. "Praise the lord!" is a little too much and tongue in cheek. I really like that fiddle, all sweepin in between lines. This sounds like a drinkin song. There come those drums again around 2:00 - not a big fan. Nice sound, the chorus is a little cheeky, and that's okay. - mtochs1 from New York on 1Jan2009 Rollicking Good Performance I'm a little prejudiced here - because I love this style of folk music. Just a rollicking good performance. Takes me back to my days in folk clubs in the '70's. The instrumentation is solid, and the lead vocal is genuine and heartfelt. Not much I can criticize here - you've done it just as it should be done. Love the drop back to just drums in one verse. - fingerpicker from Redlands, Queensland, Australia on 30Dec2008 Praise the Lord that was good Great lyric in a funny Americana song. Love the tongue in cheek chorus. The playing is very good. The mix and production could be better despite that this is a great song. Love the banjo riff. Other than production this is a great song. A Fantastic bar song! - BrownCoat from Wellsboro, Pennsylvania on 30Nov2008 Okay bluegrassy gospel song If you can get by the mixing (Backup vox too loud etc.) you might like this song. Put Tom Waites vox with some local bluegrass musicians and you will have this bands sound down. There might be a good song in there, but needs better production. - MCGallery from Obsidian, Idaho on 27Nov2008 Roosty Americana rave-up Fun track! I love the banjo and the fiddle. Really unexpected military-type snare intro and mid-section. The use of the acoustic instruments and the gritty vocal create a fun, unique mood. Everything is well-played and performed. It sounds "authentic" if you know what I mean. Reminds me a lot of some of the old New Christy Minstrels stuff. As a song it's well written with a solid structure and a hooky chorus. The shouted "Praise the Lord"'s are funny (if a little too loud in the mix.) My main complaint is I can't make out a lot of the lyrics. What I can hear is clever and very appealing, but I really have to listen to catch them. I would probably pull the rhythm down under the verses just a bit. Over all: Cool! I love the sound and the song. I would be tempted to make a couple of minor mixing tweaks, but beyond that I love it. Great work! - secretshopper1 from Victorville, California on 24Nov2008 Praise for this Song Dry drum starts it out right. This is just a great jammin' tune! Love the vocals...like Dylan meets his match. Just love this tune..nothing critical...do your thing! Who doesn't like pretty girls. - ReddSugarr from San Francisco, California on 6Nov2008 Deliver me Lord! Pretty creative in the lyrics department. Sounds like a gritty Dylan. Those crazy crash cymbals are a little much. The fiddle does a good job. It's a fun song. Not sure about the shouting and the fiddling and the drum rolls and the concept all together, but if it works in your neck of the woods, then "Praise the Lord" for weird songs that work. Good luck, I enjoyed the journey back to the back woods. - splato from Morristown, New Jersey on 5Nov2008 yeah-hoo I'm definitely not a fan of this kind of music whatever you want to call it, but nevertheless I enjoyed this song. It has to be because of the fun rythm or maibe because the arrangment, I don't know for sure, but who cares why as long as you enjoy. And this is what music is about after all, to entertain anf this one does the job. Period. - TheMaension from Los Angeles, California on 30Oct2008 Really Good! Well I have to say this really is pure Americana. This is great. You know where the melody is going but who cares..Give the the lyrics and I could sing along with it. It's got that good of a feeling to it. The fiddle is really good and the banjo is played almost like a guitar in some places. I like your background vocals to. You have a real band feel on this one. The hook hook is mighty strong to. The only thing I don't like to much is the drum intro and when you bring that back in later on in the song also. I'd like to here that part sound just a little more raw. Maybe something like going back and forth with the high hat and snare or maybe just some sticks on a stool. The way you have it it sounds a little military. Over all, a lot of energy, good mix, good production and nice instrumentation. Really upbeat and fun..As you say in the song. Praise the lord, "for this song".. Good job.. - MusicJohn from Atlanta, Georgia on 28Oct2008 Nice work Nice pure Americana song. Very good musicianship here and interesting changes in vocal textures on the chorus. I like the mix of secular and religious imagery. Nice work. - BumpkinStrikes from Irving, Texas on 26Oct2008 Country meets Irish tradition Great combination of styles. Borders between classic country and traditional Irish. I also like the lyric twist on "Praise the Lord"...but listing drink and girls (which of course are "weaknesses of the flesh"). Very well sung, particularly the group vocal in the chorus. - HighwayGhosts from Canton, Massachusetts on 21Oct2008 Praise the Lord Halleluyah for this party-number. Love the fiddle and banjo. Feel good track, good movement through the song. Great bridge. Voices suit the genre. No real crits. - danienel from Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa on 11Oct2008 Exciting chorus Great job overall - a simple bluegrass progression with solid banjo, fiddle, and drums. I like the drum roll at the beginning and midway through the song. The "Praise the Lord" chorus really does what a chorus should - raise the overall energy level of the song and give the listener something to sing along with. You've succeeded! - dannym55 from Unspecified on 9Oct2008 My revue good roots music, and has an authentic feel. Lyrics are funny and interesting. Singer has a lot of natural personality that comes through. The song could have done without the military-style drum rolls, though. - WJWann from San Antonio, Texas on 4Oct2008 Our users are very quick Something about this reminds me of Big Smith. Maybe its the group "Praise the Lord"s. The only thing I didn't really care for about this was the cymbals. They just seem out of place to me. Other then that there isn't much else I can say. The intro was a little goofy, but it wasn't bad. Maybe you could make the banjo a little louder and the fiddle a little softer, but those are real minor nits. All in all this is a catchy song. - Eurycea from Jeff, Mizerah on 1Oct2008 down HOME! A feel good slice of America. The call back on the "PRAISE the LORD!" is too loud in the mix but the group harmony is good. The lead voc is a bit too low as well. The playing is all very good. A happy peppy number. - LenCat from Mountain View, California on 30Sep2008 Pete Segar? Any relation to Pete Segar? Banjo pickin’ and guit’ strummin’ Boy there’s lots of fun to be heard here. Thanks for the listen. - DPSTANLEY from Racoon City, Minnesota on 26Sep2008 Cool drum riff in beginning Cool drum riff in beginning ye haw not bad guys maybe get a good mastering job maybe not actually sounds like you hit your mark Be Blessed - tom_sims12 from Panama City Beac, Florida on 25Sep2008 a welcome surprise Great shuffling opening which made me expect a zydeco tune, which ended up being a gospel/bluegrass number, which is fine by me. The production is excellent, pulling the strengths of the arrangement out into the open with a finely tuned mix. The singer has alot of personality and a very unique tone with an interesting tremelo effect on certain notes. I like the spirit and intensity of this cut. Overall a welcome surprise and a band I would like to hear more from. - JFargo from Austin, Texas on 22Sep2008 My Kind of Religion I think even Irish miners might cock an eyebrow at this song's tongue in cheek praise, but ya gotta laugh. First off, I like the drums that I've been hearing in traditional music lately and this song is no exception. The beat picked up and gave some fanny shaking to the lilt of the song. The snare roll part was cool and added a bit of drama, something that is often lacking in folk. The vocal is gritty, but has fair pitch and fits this style of tune well. I would ask for clearer diction, a constant theme of mine, as I could not understand the first line after "praise the lord" (for giving me thirst?). If I did understand it I might be too drunk to get it. The bass had a big, no, humungous low end on it. Like, I could feel it. I think I liked that as much as anything. It let the banjo and fiddle do their thing without the sound getting thin. So, this is a keeper, with no real "do-over" recommendations. Keep up the good work. - farmerted from Valley Center, California on 17Sep2008 Praise the Lord! Good Cristian bluegrass music. Background vocals are a little too much out front in the mix for me but good lyrics and melody. - jidai from Las Vegas, Nevada on 13Sep2008 Mojo Mojo Mojo Mojo Nixon-style Americana number. From a tight snare send off to a fun old banjo and fiddle romp, this is Americana true-and-true. I was so excited listening to this, I was yelling out "Praise the Lord" with the band. I thought they were gonna haul me away. Tremendous vocal performance - gravelly, gritty voice with a touch of vibrato for good measure. Fun, "yell it out" background singers. The arrangement was smart - impressed how you went back into that snare break. You could teach a class (Hook 101) on how to write a catchy tune. Brillant, energetic performance. Encore, encore! - AndrewKowal from Southampton, Massachusetts on 10Sep2008 |
