Roger & The Rockets - Walking Band 


Irish folk music rock and lively americana are the core words when 
listening to the new CD of the Swedish link Roger & the rockets. 
Singer and songwriter Roger Häggstrom are again sticking out. For the 
successor of the debut "Unknown Man" he has written fifty songs. 
Eventually thirteen songs on "Walking Band" appeared. The quintet using 
traditional instruments such as dobro, violin, mandoline and banjo prroduces 
songs with delicious, simple and catchy melodies.

The rattling opener of this CD "Walking Band" is similar to the repertoire of 
the partyband "The Levellers", while tracks like "Milk And Honey", "Got To Go", 
"So Lonely", "Come On down" carry a stamp of Tom Petty and the earlier work by 
"The Beatles". 

Roger is a collector of old musical instruments. For this record he used a 
number of authentic instruments, such as a harp guitar from 1900 and a 1924 Gibson 
mandolin. For the recording of the vocals, he occasionally used a microphone made in 
the 1930's. 

Many sing-along tunes like "Walking Band" are on the CD, but Thank God also a few 
stripped down songs. On "One United State" a harp guitar and on and "Don't feel Sorry" 
we hear Mr HÄGGSTRÖM on a dobro from the 1930's, beautifully supported by Eskil 
Lövström on the trombone. 

I miss some variation of the numbers on this CD. Happy, hopping Americana and 
Irishfolk music is however always good. This trick is recognizable and already 
applied on the debute CD. Yet this CD of "Roger & the rockets" gets my 
approval by the contagious character. If I would give stars one would directly go 
to the authentic cover photo which a marching and playing band last seen 1897.

Irländsk folkmusik, rock och livlig americana är nyckelorden när 
man lyssnar på den nya CD av det svenska bandet "Roger & the Rockets". 
Sångaren och låtskrivaren Roger Häggström sticker återigen ut. För 
efterföljaren till debut "Unknown Man" har han skrivit femtio låtar. 
Så småningom hamnade tretton låtar på "Walking Band". Kvintetten, som 
använda traditionella instrument såsom dobro, fiol, Mandolin och 
banjo, producerar låtar med läckra, enkla och medryckande melodier. 

Den skramlade öppningen på denna CD "Walking Band" liknar repertoaren 
hos partybandet "The Levellers", medan låtar som "Milk and Honey", 
"Got To Go", "So Lonely", "Come on down" har en stämpel av Tom Petty 
och tidiga "The Beatles". 

Roger är en samlare av gamla musikinstrument. Till denna CD har han använt ett 
antal autentiska instrument, såsom en harpgitarr från 1900 och en 1924 
Gibson mandolin. För inspelning av sång, använde han ibland en mikrofon gjord
på 1930-talet. 

Många allsångslåtar liknande "Walking Band" finns på CD, men jag tackar Gud för
några enklare sånger. På "One united state" används en harpa gitarr och på
"Don't feel sorry" kan vi höra herr Häggström på en Dobro från 1930-talet, 
vackert ackompanjerad av Eskil Lövström på trombon. 

Jag saknar en viss variation av numren på denna CD. Glad, hoppande Americana och 
Irländsk folkmusik är dock alltid bra. Detta trick känns igen från
debut-CD'n. Men även denna "Roger & The Rockets" CD får mitt godkännande 
tack vare sin smittsam karaktär. Om jag skulle ge stjärnor skulle en gå direkt 
till den autentiska omslagsbilden på ett marscherande och spelande band som 
senast sågs 1897.
